U.S. visa guide
L-1 is for employees of multinational companies being transferred from a non-U.S. office to the U.S. office. L-1A is for executives and managers (up to 7 years); L-1B is for specialized-knowledge employees (up to 5 years). The Indian and U.S. entities must have a qualifying relationship (parent, subsidiary, branch, or affiliate), and you must have worked for the Indian entity for at least 1 of the last 3 years.
Typical validity
Up to 3 years initially (1 year for new offices)
Max stay per visit
L-1A: 7 years total. L-1B: 5 years total.
Visa fee
USD 205
L-1 is heavily used by Indian IT services firms. L-1B specialised knowledge has been a focus of consular scrutiny in recent years; expect detailed questions about exactly what specialised knowledge you have and why a U.S. employee couldn't do the same role. L-1 was removed from DropBox in September 2025; in-person interview required.
