U.S. visa guide
The J-1 covers a wide range of cultural exchange programs designated by the U.S. State Department. From India, the most common J-1 use cases are research scholars and visiting professors; medical residents (J-1 ECFMG); summer work and travel; au pair programs; and short internships at U.S. companies through approved sponsors. J-1 may carry a 2-year home-residency requirement (Section 212(e)) that prevents some visa changes after the program ends.

Many Indian J-1 holders (especially medical residents) become subject to the 2-year home-residency requirement. This blocks H-1B and green card sponsorship until you spend 2 years in India after the J-1, unless you obtain a waiver. Confirm with the sponsor before accepting the program. J-1 was removed from the interview-waiver program in September 2025; in-person interview is now required.
